On roads and highways it's mandatory to have car lights on, even during daytime. There are frequent speed controls but running red lights or stops signs are common. Seat belts when driving are mandatory. The use of a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, with the exception of a hands-free system. Drivers are to carry at all times while driving, a valid driver's license, registration documents and insurance documents. All of the highway roads are privately owned and you will be required to pay a small charge for using them. There are plenty of car parks within the city centres and outside of the city, you just need to be sure you are parking your car in a safe area. In the provinces bordering other countries, the police frequently stop cars at police checkpoints to check insurance and registration papers and drivers' licenses. These checks may also involve inspection of the trunk for contraband and a mandatory 2 peso fee for disinfection where you drive your car over sprays.
